Note: All students are encouraged to earn 0.5 credits of PE per year through their junior year.

Note: Sophomores need to sign up for health class or to complete health as an independent study course.

Graduation Requirements

One must also:

• Earn a competent-level score of 3 out of 4 on the WASL, Washington Assessment of Student Learning, in reading, writing, math and science.
• Satisfactorily complete the state-mandated CBAs, Classroom-Based Assessments, in social studies and health.  You will complete the CBAs in your freshman and sophomore years in your humanities and health classes.
• Showcase a portfolio of classroom work on your personal web page on the AHS server. The work must be from all core courses, must meet school-wide performance standards, and must give evidence that you understand the methods of disciplined inquiry used in both physical and social sciences and can apply concepts and skills from your core classes to solve real-world problems.
• Propose, plan, and satisfactorily carry out an independent-study senior project according to district guidelines. The project must demonstrate State Learning Goals 3 & 4:
  • that you can “think analytically, logically, and creatively, and integrate experience and knowledge to form reasoned judgments and solve problems.”
  • that you “understand the importance of work and how performance, effort, and decisions directly affect career and educational opportunities.”
• Your senior project proposal must be approved before you can begin working on the project.  Seniors should plan on completing their projects by the end of first semester of their senior year.

Notes:

• 1.0 credit = 150 hours (e.g., 50 minutes per day of class time, or 250 minutes per week in any configuration).
• In grades 9 through 11, you must enroll in six courses per semester, which is the equivalent of 6.0 credits per year. 
• You must contract for PE credit outside of the regular school day.
• You may earn credit for art either through AHS or through an alternative learning experience outside of school.
• Most Aviation High School students will graduate with more than 23 credits.
• The State Board of Education has recommended that graduation requirements be increased for all Washington State students. This initiative is being called CORE 24, which means that students would need to earn 24 credits to graduate high school.  If funded by the legislature, CORE 24 could be implemented as soon as the 2009-2010 school year.  The good news is that Aviation High School is already in alignment with the State Board’s recommendation!
